How do I patch over the original 1.0 file to the new file 1.0.5, it won't simply let me drag and drop from the my zip folder onto the desktop without it loading.

You don't need to patch anything: the new download is the full game, so you can delete/uninstall the old one and unzip the 1.0.5 in a new directory.
